Bishop Samuel of Shabin al-Qanatir (1937 – 2003)

One of our great bishops was Bishop Samuel of Shabin al-Qanatir (a town in Qalyubiyya Governorate, in the Nile Delta, just above Cairo). His parish extended to other areas, including Qaha, Tukh, al-Khanka, Abu Za’abal). He was ordained bishop in 1992 by Patriarch Shenouda III.

Bishop Samuel was a scholar who led a saintly life. He wrote several books, but was also engaged in publishing Coptic literature, and make it accessible to the common man. Top of the list of the important books (in Arabic) that he had published are:

  • The History of the Patriarchs (in 3 parts: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3)
  • The History of Abu al-Makarim (in 4 parts: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4). The first part had never been published before.
  • The Jacobite Coptic Synaxarium (ed. Rene Baset) (in 3 parts: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3)
